One of London's most famous modern landmarks has finally reopened after a three year renovation. The Savoy hotel is one of the swankiest hotels in the city, and it has had that reputation for over 100 years, opening in 1889. The hotel has been host to the likes of George Gershwin, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire and Noel Coward, along with Harry Truman, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles.
The renovation meticulously maintained the two design themes of Edwardian and Art Deco; two styles that are not conventionally used together, but compliment each other, when done right. The project was taken on by Pierre Yves Rochon, who is world renowned for his architecture and design work. They are nine suites that pay tribute to a few of the artists and well known figures who made the legendary hotel their London home away from home including Sinatra, Maria Callas, Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich. All of the rooms are filled with unique art, and literature, thus creating a feeling of being at home.
When I was in London a few years ago, The Savoy was obviously not opened, but I remember walking by it and seeing the work being done but not knowing what was being worked on. I can't wait to go back and see the shinning Deco marquee fully completed.
